Analytical painting (also planned painting) is a contemporary art movement of the 1970s.
With Concept Art as its precursor, it is an art movement that reflects on and analyses the fundamentals and possibilities of painting with painterly means. The name comes from Klaus Honnef. Closely related terms are "Fundamental Painting", "Planned Painting" or "Essential Painting". Essential is the "reduction" of painting to a painting that shows only itself and has no relationship, however remote, to the world outside the painting. The years between 1972 and 1977 were the decisive years of public perception.
Artists (e.g. Daniel Buren, Niele Toroni, Raimund Girke or Robert Ryman) tried to make the quality of the painting application and the picture carrier (canvas, cardboard, metal, plastic) work for them by using white as the basic colour, with simple stripes or monochrome application. Winfred Gaul founded one of the important positions of analytical painting in Germany.
