He signed his paintings only with the monogram "FVD", occasionally joined with an "H" (Harlemensis), and followed by "Fecit". His paintings are counted among the banquet pieces (also: Banketjes or Ontbijtjes). However, since banketje or ontbijtje refers to almost all paintings depicting a table laden with food and crockery, a more differentiated designation for the paintings such as those created by Dyck and Gillis would be Schautafel. It seems that Floris van Dyck was influenced by the Flemish painters Clara Peeters and Osias Beert. Together with his fellow painter Nicolaes Gillis, Floris van Dyck established the banquet pieces (Schautafeln) in the city of Haarlem as an independent subject. Compared to Nicolaes Gillis, Floris van Dyck has a greater significance and can thus be said to have "the strongest stylistic force". The paintings of Floris van Dyck and Nicolaes Gillis had a strong influence on the following generation of painters. They paved the way for a new type of banquet piece - Het Monochrome Banketje. Floris van Dyck, also Floris van Dijck or Floris Claesz. van Dyck (* c. 1575 in Delft; † before April 1651 in Haarlem) was a Dutch still life painter of the Golden Age. His only known relative is his cousin, the painter and draughtsman Pieter Cornelisz. van Dyck. He first lived in Haarlem, where he became engaged in 1604 and later married for the first time. Nothing is known about his education. However, it is considered certain that he undertook a trip to Rome and stayed there around 1600. In 1606 he was already back in the Netherlands, in the city of Haarlem. In 1610 he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem and in 1637 its head. Floris van Dyck married for the second time in October 1627. After this marriage to Cornelia Jansdr. Vlasmans, who brought her fortune into the marriage, he no longer seemed to depend on his profession as a painter and thus on a self-generated income. He died shortly before April in 1651. Photo from the project "It’s a Mad, Mad World". Ukraine, Borodyanka | 2022. Borodyanka is a quiet town with a population of 13,000. It is located on the road to Kyiv. In 1240, the city was destroyed by the Mongol-Tatars, but later it was rebuilt. In 2022, the Russians turned Borodyanka into ruins. Most of the buildings in the city were destroyed. 8 multi-story buildings were destroyed, 32 were damaged. About 950 private houses were destroyed and damaged. As a result of airstrikes, residents were buried alive, many lay dying in the streets for weeks, as the Russians did not allow rescue services. Hundreds killed and missing. The city was under occupation for a month. The Russians took over the local psychiatric boarding school, which housed about 500 patients, several employees and no doctors. Russian soldiers set up their positions on the territory of the psychiatric hospital and mined the area around the hospital. Boarding house residents became a living shield for them. Military reality invaded the measured life of psychiatric hospital patients. This negatively affected the condition of patients. People with a traumatized psyche were left in the boarding house without water, food, electricity, heating and proper care, many of them bedridden for years. Patients died from cold, stress and lack of medicine. The temperature inside the building dropped to minus 7 degrees Celsius. There was no running water in the hospital. People drank water from the lake and got diarrhea. Local residents who lost their homes sought salvation in the boarding school, among them were the wounded and the dying. 13 people died during the occupation. They were buried on the territory of a psychoneurological boarding school. The director of the boarding school and his assistant buried the dead patients with their own hands. On March 13, international organizations evacuated patients and medical personnel. Patients moved to different regions of Ukraine, more than 20 patients died, not being able to settle in a new place. Discover Limited Edition Narrative art refers to the content of the artwork, in other words, what is being painted not how it is being painted. Narrative art is art that tells a story. This can be to show a moment in time or infer a sequence of events that happen over a period of time. A narrative artwork will usually evoke an emotion in the viewer. Narrative art is art that tells a story, either as a moment in an ongoing story or as a sequence of events unfolding over time. Some of the earliest evidence of human art suggests that people told stories with pictures. Narrative Art tells a story. It uses the power of the visual image to ignite imaginations, evoke emotions and capture universal cultural truths and aspirations. What distinguishes Narrative Art from other genres is its ability to narrate a story across diverse cultures, preserving it for future generations. Among the vehicles of narrative are articulated language, pictures, still or moving, gestures, and an ordered mixture of all those substances; narrative is present in myth, legend, fables, tales, short stories, epics, history, tragedy, comedy, pantomime, paintings, stained-glass windows, movies, local news, conversation. Moreover, in this infinite variety of forms, it is present at all times, in all places, in all societies; indeed narrative starts with the very history of mankind; there is not, there has never been anywhere, any people without narrative. Although there are some common features to all narrative art, different cultures have developed idiosyncratic ways to discern narrative action from pictures. Prior to the advent of literacy most narrative art was done in a simultaneous narrative style with very little overarching organization. Once literacy developed in different parts of the world pictures began to be organized along register lines, like lines on a page, that helped define the direction of the narrative. This method of linking scenes together led to other ways of telling stories in the 20th century, namely the newspaper, comic strips and comic books. The Illustrated Dictionary of Art Terms defines “Narrative Art” as: Art which illustrates or tells a story. It usually describes self-explanatory events from daily life or those drawn from a text, well-known folk tale or myth. Some of the stories told in paint are rather straightforward, easily read by most viewers: simple pictures. Others convey content through more obscure symbols, using details freighted with personal, often cryptic meaning—complex images that perhaps reflect the complex circumstances of their creation. But all suggest a basic and enduring fascination with a story well told, with a tale well painted. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts. By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community.
